About Hijiyama Greeting from the President

For the“tomorrow” of humanbeings and society

Makoto miyatani

Based on our founding spirit and philosophy of nurturing individuals who “strive toward the ideal of eternal and everlasting life,” Hijiyama University and Hijiyama Junior College cultivate professionals with specialized knowledge and rich humanity who contribute to the development of local communities and the world. Located about 15 minutes from the heart of Hiroshima City, our campus faces the lush Ota River and is surrounded by greenery and flowers throughout the seasons. It is here that our students dedicate themselves to their studies as they work to shape their own futures.
In a future society where it is difficult to predict events and changes and when they will occur, we have identified the qualities and abilities we want you to acquire on this campus so that you can live better and lead happy lives. We refer to these as the “4×3 Hijiyama Skills.” The number 4 represents the four life skills: “Independence,” “Imagination,” “Coexistence,” and “Creativity.” For each of these skills, we have indicated three specific actions and skills that serve as clues for their cultivation.
To implement and realize these actions and skills, it is essential that you have a proactive approach to learning. To this end, our university actively adopts active learning. You will step outside the classroom and campus to identify challenges and conduct investigations and research to solve them. Based on your findings, you will give presentations and engage in discussions, which will lead to the discovery of new challenges. Through this “Hijiyama-style Active Learning,” you will nurture both academic ability and resourcefulness. We have created an environment that supports wide-ranging, high-quality learning experiences for you, starting with group study in learning rooms and study halls, including the establishment of a Learning Commons on the second floor of Building 3. We have also created a system to make the results of your learning visible. We hope that you will learn and take on challenges in an independent and proactive manner while experiencing a sense of personal growth, thereby cultivating the skills necessary for your future.
All faculty and staff members at Hijiyama University and Hijiyama Junior College look forward to seeing you on campus. Let’s work together to shape a brighter tomorrow.

Hijiyama University and Hijiyama Junior College President
